So many breeds to chose from! Personality traits, genetic disease predispositions, and size are all important in selecting a dog. But, its critical to consider the type of coat a dog has and what will be needed to maintain it when looking for your next dog!
Whether you already have a curly coat or considering adding one to your home, keep these tips in mind:
Types of Curly Coats
Curly-coated dogs make up a wide variety of beautiful, energetic, and high maintenance breeds. This category includes but is not limited to:
- Bichon Frises
- Bedlington Terriers
- Kerry Blue Terriers
- Portuguese and other Water Dogs
To prevent matted hair, curly coats often require a high amount of upkeep. This maintenance is especially important if you wish to keep your pooch in a longer hairstyle. But despite being a lot of work, the shedding from these dogs is barely noticeable. Some owners even claim that these dogs do not shed at all, but this is not true. Any living thing with hair or fur is going to shed hair — even us humans! That being said, these breeds are great for people who want to deal with minimal shedding.
Maintenance at Home
Curly coats require regular professional grooming, as well as home maintenance in the form of brushing and combing at least every other day. If you don’t want to commit to that much upkeep at home, these breeds can look adorable in short and low maintenance clips. If you are committed to having a beautiful luscious curly coat and are willing to do the home care necessary, in tandem with your groomer the results can be stunning. Many of these breeds can pull off a variety of styles ranging from traditional to fun and adorable clips. Curly coats are among some of the most beautiful and elegant dogs out there.
