Orthopedic Surgery

What We Offer

At City Dog Vet, we offer advanced veterinary orthopedic surgeries for Madison area dogs and the surrounding communities, including TPLO, LFS, FHO, and patellar surgery at an affordable price.

Cruciate Repair

We offer two procedures to correct torn cruciate ligaments in dogs.

The TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) consists of cutting the top of the tibia, rotating it, and stabilizing it in a new position with a plate. The TPLO procedure works well in medium to large-sized dogs, even large, athletic dogs.

The LFS (Lateral Fabellar Suture) is another technique used to correct a torn cruciate ligament. This procedure involves surgically placing a suture implant to help stabilize the knee. This technique works best in smaller breed dogs.

FHO

The FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) procedure aims to restore pain-free mobility to the hip by removing the head and neck of the femur. This procedure works well for dogs less than 50 lbs that are suffering from hip fractures, dislocated hips, hip dysplasia, or severe arthritis of the hips.

Patellar Surgery

The patella, or knee cap, can sometimes pop out of place causing your dog to limp. This is called patellar luxation, which can be corrected surgically by adjusting the mechanics of the knee so the patella stays in place. This is especially common for small-breed dogs.

Consultation

During the initial consultation at City Dog Vet, Dr. Andy Stevens will talk with you in more detail about the surgery and assess your pet’s eligibility for the orthopedic procedure through a physical exam and review of history. X-rays may be taken at this initial consultation.

 Surgery

On the day of surgery, your dog will receive anesthesia and pain medications so they are comfortable and stress-free. After surgery, dogs are discharged to the comfort of their own home. Select cases may have arrangements for overnight care if needed.

 Recovery

On the day of surgery, your dog will receive anesthesia and pain medications so they are comfortable and stress-free. After surgery, dogs are discharged to the comfort of their own home. Select cases may have arrangements for overnight care if needed.

Once your dog is home, they will need to rest to ensure a full recovery. Care instructions will be sent home with you upon discharge that contains information on the best way to help your dog heal after surgery.

6-10 weeks: Initial recovery from orthopedic surgery can range from 6-10 weeks, depending on the procedure.

12 weeks: Clearance to return to full physical activity will occur at approximately 12 weeks, depending on the surgery.
